Recently the diet pill Hoodia, also known as Hoodoba, has become popular as a natural appetite suppressant. The indigenous people of South Africa have used Hoodia to control hunger cravings for centuries. During long hunting expeditions, the San would chew on pieces of cactus, which would stimulate the hypothalamus and trick their stomachs into believing they were full. Recent studies have shown that Hoodia gordonii can reduce caloric intake up to 50% and help reduce blood pressure without unwanted side effects. Hoodia gordonii is harvested from the hoodia cactus, which is a stem succulent that extends up to 1 meter high and presents exuberant, aromatic flowers. Hoodia originates from South African where it is a protected plant that can be found from Central Namibia to Southern Angola in rocky areas and plains. Hoodia is also known as “Bushman’s Hat,” “Queen of the Namib” and “Xshoba.”
