One could use a script for Kermit95 (windows) or C-Kermit.
Kermit is fully scriptable and can call other protocols, e.g. 'sz'. It's
(from my point of view) easier to handle than expect --- and more
portable.
I can believe it, although looking on my system, there is only G-kermit,
which doesn't support scripting. And Kermit95 is pay software.
Indeed I seem to recall religious wars about the C-kermit licence. Yes,
http://www.columbia.edu/kermit/kermit.html#license has something about it.
So portable yes, but not entirely ubiquitous.
Anyway, if you already have a script, we could check it in as a template :-).
