It was also very obscure IIRC.  I didn't look too far, but I did find 
this in the ChangeLog:

2001-04-27  Bart Veer  <bartv@redhat.com>

	* expr.cxx
	Add support for functions and the string concatenation operator.

Maybe that'll give you a hint where to look.
