OK that's an inappropriate example.
Back to my original question. My cygwin is of version
1.3.10. The command dd failed because it does know
/dev/fd0.
$ dd conv=sync if=install/bin/redboot.bin of=/dev/fd0
dd: opening `/dev/fd0': No such file or directory
(instruction from Redboot User Guide)
