this is a long shot, but are you sure
of correct polarity of the serial port
cables (rxd/txd, cts/rts, etc.)? i once
saw such an error with exactly your
symptoms. swapped the normal cable with
a null modem (crossover) cable and it
all worked. we waved our hands and
theorized about crosstalk and backwards
driven transistors and so on and went on
with our work.
