ecosconfig is a simpler tool than the GUI configtool. It may not do
all the same checks.
In this case, it might be better if the tools behaved as follows:
1) the GUI tool should probably warn when adding a hardware package
not listed for the current target, popping up a message box to
ask for user confirmation. Completely disallowing such actions is
too strong, but the user should get a warning that she/he is
doing something potentially dangerous.
2) ecosconfig should be extended with some checks. Adding a hardware
package not listed for the current target should be disallowed by
default, but the user could override this with e.g. a --force
option.
However there are very many ways in which the configuration tools can
be improved. This particular problem has not occurred very often, so
fixing it is not a high priority for me. You might want to file a
bugzilla report to make sure it does not get forgotten.
