Have you watched the network activity to see more of what's happening
"on the wire"?

I actually think the comments are a bit out of date (it happens).
This driver has been used extensively by other customers with 82557
with no troubles.

Sadly, the information referred to can only be obtained under
NDA from Intel (or at least this was the case last I heard).
