Well, as I have been poking through the code, I'm not so sure anymore that
my original hypothesis was correct. Heck, I might even have to try to debug
the darn thing :-). I'll poke around some more, perhaps add a printf or
two, and submit a patch (if required) or an explanation ("Here is the
boneheaded thing I was doing wrong") shortly.
