GDB through PCI

Is it possible to debug a target from across the PCI bus? I have only one
serial port (used) and no ethernet. My target sits on the pci bus inside a
standard pc. I was thinking if I could direct GDB to use some memory
location and an interrupt then I could write a small driver on the pc side
that would look like a serial device to GDB.

Anyone tried this? Anyone have any thoughts on how to do this?

thanks,
