As far as i know, there is no way to do this directly.
What i think is happening in the first message you reference is that
Grant probably has a machine on the outside of the firewall which can
do pserver to ecos.sourceware.org. He is using ssh to make a tunnel
between the local machine and the machine outside the firewall. That
machine automatically forwards all traffic in the tunnel to
ecos.sourceware.org. Take a look at the man page for ssh, -L and -R.
