Either the Atlas or the Malta would be good places to start. Look at
how they use the MIPS32 variant package and copy the structure.

All new development should be done against the CVS source tree. This
makes it easier to update when you contribute it back -- which I hope
you intend to do.

If somebody has done it, then they have kept very quiet about it.
