The hoodia plant is a spiny cactus that grows in the Kalahari desert in Africa, mostly in the arid areas of South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia. San Bushmen (who are one of the world's oldest and most primitive hunter-gatherer tribes), have known about the hoodia cactus for countless generations. Rock paintings of the San Bushmen go back more than 20,000 years. The nomadic Bushmen, who live in this harsh and arid desert, use the hoodia cactus as an appetite suppressant during their long marches and hunting trips through the vast desert.I personally have not tried hoodia capsules or prescribed it to patients. Therefore I do not have first hand experience as to whether hoodia supplements are effective for appetite control, and if they are, how many capsules would be required. We've had feedback from hoodia users regarding appetite control, and the results are mixed. Overall, though, it seems 60% of the feedback has been positive. Some people find 5-HTP or Acetyl-l-Carnitine to also have appetite suppressing qualities. It's really difficult to know who will respond to which supplement, if any.
