I'd also like to encourage maintainers (a) to help clean up the state of
patches submitted by occasional contributors with only a few patches
listed in patchwork, and (b) to ping their own patches that are pending
review (if it's been a while, then consider retesting and resubmitting,
marking the old patch as superseded - in particular, definitely do that
for any patches last submitted before we started using patchwork in March
2014).
Frequent contributors can be expected to deal with keeping state for their
own patches clean (and with pinging etc.), but this shouldn't be required
for infrequent contributors; the community should collectively be able to
deal with those patches.
